event Navigation Training
date 2/14/04 - 8:30am Orientation, 9am Start, 2pm Finish
place Red Top Mountain State Park, meet at Lodge

info Directions: I-75 North to Exit 285, East on Red Top Mtn Rd, North on Park Mountain Rd (a left when you see the Visitor Center), East on Lodge Rd to the Lodge/Restaurant.

Mountain Cove Grill, 7am-9pm serves breakfast/lunch/dinner (you'll probably find me there if not the parking lot)

Maps/UTM coordinates/punch sheets will be given out at 9am sharp!

The training will be handled like the first leg of an actual race. UTM's for checkpoints(CP's) have been set using Garmin Venture GPS and onsite terrain review by PRD. The full course is 12 CPs and approx 10 miles and will be a "Rogaine".

Rogaine? Not just for balding, rogaining is a type of navigation race where you choose your own route and the order within a fixed amount of time. Why a Rogaine?

  • Beginners can get as many CPs as they can before 2pm
  • Advanced racers can try to finish the fastest
  • Route selection is a key skill
  • You'll find this in races (e.g. Save the World, AWAR)
  • Avoids "follow the leader" situations

Note: The full course is not for beginners, it will be a workout.

Required Gear: Cell Phone, Compass, Plotter, Pen/Pencil, Water, Your Brain (Aside from using it to navigate there are busy roads throughout the park, participate at your own risk).

Recommended: Straight edge, Money for breakfast/lunch at Mountain Cove Grill, Camera(the area is thick with deer).

Your pseudo-race director(PRD) for this event is Ron Sanders 678-643-6925. If you have any questions please post them on the Trailblazers Message Board (Training Announcements) so everyone can see the reply.

p.s. I'm working on prizes for the winning team of 3.
