Instructions
If
you didn’t print a map of the mountain grab one at the visitor
center.
If
you are coming out of the main entrance of the Visitors center, head
towards the left on the walking path to an intersection with a water
fountain.
Start
your time at the water fountain.
Section 1: (Blue Line) Visitor Center to the Illinois
Monument around the
mountain. Follow the trail that the water fountain is on into the
woods.
This trail will lead around the mountain and will turn into service
road
(gravel wide enough for a pickup) . Within the first 5-10 minutes
you
will come to your first intersection that has a sign pointing back
where
you came that says - Visitor Center. At this intersection head left.
There are several other trail intersections within the first couple
of
miles, keep right and you will get where you need to go. Once the
trail
turns to service road it will remain service road until you cross
Burnt
Hickory Road, remember this because there is one trail that turns
right off
the road, and you don't want to take the trail. Cross over Burnt
Hickory
Rd and follow the trail on the other side. It will eventually lead
you to
the main trail between Pigeon Hill and Cheatham Hill. Follow the
main trail
south to Cheatham hill and the Illinois Monument.
Question
1. When was the Illinois Monument Dedicated?
Section
2: (Yellow Line)Cheatham Hill to Kolb Farm Loop
From the Illinois monument, head West along the trail that
goes down the hill, across the field, and into the woods.
This trail
will lead
you to the activity/parking area and your next question
Question
2. What was the date and time that 5 brigades assaulted the confederates
of Hardees Corp?
Pick
up the trail at the south end of the parking lot and head right. As
you approach the south end of the loop
you will enter
a bamboo grove
and your next question.
Question
3. What company manufactured the water fountain, and what city and
state are just below the company name?
Continue
along the trail for a couple of miles until you cross over the stream
with a bridge. At
the intersection go whichever
direction you
want, one way is steeper, one way is longer, but they both
merge within a couple of hundred yards. At the trail intersection
with the bench head right, this will take you to the Cheatham Hill
parking lot.
Section
3: (Purple Line)Cheatham Hill parking area to Visitors Center over
the mountain.
Head out of the parking lot along the road and pick up the
trail on the left side of the road just after you leave
the parking
lot area. This
trail parallels the road until you hit Dallas Highway.
Head North following the main trail across Dallas Highway
and Burnt Hickory Rd. Get ready for an uphill climb because
that’s
what you get to enjoy until you hit the top of the Kennesaw
Mountain.
Question
4. How many Cannons are lined up along the trail between Pigeon Hill
and The Kennesaw Mountain
viewing/parking
area?
Head
down the mountain along the trail and to the visitor center.
Stop
your time at the water fountain.
