We have all been there before. You just forded a river to find out exactly how “waterproof” your map case isn’t. Perhaps you had to open your map case at each CP to have your passport signed. Or maybe you forgot to close your map case and tossed it into the bottom of your boat during a long paddle. All of these things end in the same result, your map or passport instructions looking like a bowl of oatmeal.
These headaches will be a thing of the past in the Adventure24 Adventure Race and the Ultra O-gaine. Not only will you have custom made maps for each event, but both the maps and passport instructions will be on waterproof paper! You can now mock Mother Nature as her efforts to make navigation difficult have been thwarted by the use of waterproof paper.

You are right on about the maps, passport, rules, etc. getting soaked when you think you have closed the maps case tightly & it's not. Just finished doing Save the World AR last weekend where they had waterproof maps and it sure makes a difference. Ever try reading details through a well used map case - the area you need to see usually falls under some spot that has been rubbed/scratched by something from the bike, boat, etc. It was great to be able to leave all the maps in the map case, pull out the one you needed and not worry about it falling apart - especially when it poured on Sunday.
For races where there are not waterproof maps;
1.) Can anyone suggest a map case they have used that is user friendly (i.e. Good size, seals easily and is easy to read through)
2.) Any suggestions/ideas how to minimize the moisture that builds up inside the case during the night when the air is cooler on the exterior & condensation occurs on the inside face of the case.
I'd like to have a better map case(s) before we head out to Primal Quest
Brian, Lisa & Allen - nice job at STW

Good topic Jay. The condensation issue is huge. My map case ends up having its own weather system inside. My favorite map story is after Ocmulgee last year when all I had left of the maps was a wadded up ball that I threw against the wall of the building where we finished. It stuck like glue
Not sure if you'll have as much of a problem in Mormon land, other than the water sections of course. Utah, the place where the separation of church and state is 200 yards |

Condensation: You can try including a small desiccant(sp) package (1"square) that you will often see with new shoes or with electronics inside your mapcase - I believe you can zap them in a microwave for a few seconds to "recharge" them (drive out the water) - store them in a ziplock until you need to use them - or better inside your closed mapcase. You need to put in there at the race start so it has time to work and keep water out of the map case...they won't "soak" up 1/2 cup of water.
It would be pretty easy to test the effectiveness...all you need is a humid day, mapcase, desiccant package and a freezer...just give the package a few hours to work first.
Cheers,
Neal |

If you're saddled with 1:24000 maps, where you're gonna have to be folding maps a bunch in soggy conditions, I haven't found a good way around it. But I'm pretty sure PQ won't end up giving you 30 topos.
So, you should be able to go with a mapcase that may not be as efficient on the open/close side of things without sacrificing too much.
At the last PQ, I used my teammate Mark's mapcase, an Ortlieb:
http://www.ortliebusa.com/cartgenie/prodInfo.asp?pid=47&cid=2
I loved it and afterwards picked up a couple (diff sizes) for myself, but we usually get 1:24's so I haven't used them yet. They don't get funked up like aloksaks and they are easy to fold and thumb the map.
I believe Barker uses them as well, so he might be able to speak to the subject, if you can bring him out of hiding. |

I think the Ortlieb is best case around - I have a "large" sized one if you want to borrow it - just shoot me an email. Alosaks really (alo)SUK for a long wet race - you can't trust the seal and the don't stay clear after multiple uses.
I hear PQ is being a real pain this year to deal with but you could try asking about map have number of maps/waterproof etc...maybe you will get a straight answer...that won't change. Lasttime didn't they have pre-printed waterproof maps...maybe 11" by 17"? |

I thought Barker had a way to waterproof the maps - he just tattoos them on his body
Also- not on topic, but where we canyoneered in Utah, the town was intentionally built on the Arizona border so that the polygamists could literally cross the street to escape the law's jurisdiction.
Good topic- don't mean to distract. . . |

good point!...it's great to see Kevin & co providing quality waterproof maps for both events.
We do end to hijack threads way to often...sometimes fun but often counter-productive Can you easily correct/move offending messages to a new thread? for map cases.... &/or "mormon" adventuring racing teams...where you just near one mandatory guy and as many woman as he can buy/beg or steal... |

Thanks for all of the good information on the map case situation.
Kevin - I planned on racing the A24 AR solo but was told not to with PQ so close. Someone has to keep the Farmer's, Goble's, Simril's on their toes. Who's figuring the odds on these guys??
So Mr. Barker - where are you??

Just woke up from a few hours sleep after spending all night swimming in Allatoona looking for nice houses to break into
I use the Ortleib. Both sizes as the small is too small and the large is too large BUT they are waterproof. Three thumbs up.
Now back to the original topic and leave me alone, I didn't do it, it was two other guys... |

I think Cathi's got the right idea!
I think map cases are the one piece of gear that the vast majority of racers have yet to find a product they really like. Most everything else has great gear but map cases don't seem to be up to par. I'll second how crappy the splash caddy is too.
Jay: You've got two weeks to recover! I was suppose to volunteer again this year at PQ but the original date for A24 has the week prior to the race and I just knew I wouldn't have time to do them both. Turns out it was a good call anyways since I'm getting married in September and need that time off for my honeymoon. |

| I have to say that I'm pretty darn satisfied with my Seal Line case, especially with the rig I've got on the bike. |

Two weeks - that's what I thought too but if something happened, like I beat Goble, Farmer & Lee, they would beat me to a pulp - then what would I tell my team mates for PQ?
Plus (the real reason) a trainer we are working with said no way.

Jays plum skairt.
FYI: I fear none of the people listed. Ms. Brenda Simril is the one making me lose sleep at night. It would be far more humane to be mauled by a black bear than to have the Brender fillet me out there in the woods. |
